Disabled Vet Labeled “Terrorist” For Investigating Cost Of Surveillance Cameras

Characterization was reprisal for open records request, charges Elbert County man

A 55-year-old disabled veteran was labeled a “terrorist” by three county commissioners after he photographed security cameras at the Elbert County administration building in Colorado as part of an investigation, a designation the man claimed was retribution for him filing multiple open-records requests.

Elbert County resident Don Pippin took pictures of the security cameras back in April as part of an open-records request that sought to discover the cost of the surveillance system. An employee immediately reported Pippin to the commissioners for engaging in suspicious activity.

“After the commissioners met on the issue, “(Commissioner Kurt) Schlegel asked for and received a temporary court order barring Pippin from the building, saying the back of his hair stood up when he saw what he says was footage of Pippin “casing” the building for a possible attack,” reports the Denver Post.
Schlegel called Pippin a “terrorist” and attempted to secure a permanent protection order against him, but a judge threw the request out, noting that Pippin posed no threat to anybody.

Pippin charges that the commissioners were attempting to frame and demonize him as a terrorist as a reprisal for his routine filing of open records requests.

Pippin and his attorney are now seeking $2.4 million in damages from the three commissioners who characterized him as a terrorist, $1 million for emotional distress, $500,000 for loss of enjoyment of life and $900,000 for impairment of future earning capacity.

“It’s been a very emotional thing for him,” Pippin’s attorney, Terry Wallace, told the Denver Post. “When that county judge said, ‘You’ve been accused of being a terrorist — are you aware of that?’ That’s when it set in.”

As we have previously documented, the characterization of people who both film surveillance cameras and those who ask questions of their government as terrorists is rampant in America.

A 2011 Department of Homeland Security PSA depicted photographers who “hang around for no apparent reason” as terrorists and encouraged the public to report them to authorities.

Recent federal training manuals and other documents have characterized those suspicious of government or people who ask questions as potential terrorists.

A recent DHS-funded study produced by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland characterizes Americans who are “suspicious of centralized federal authority” as “extreme right-wing” terrorists.

Americans “frustrated with mainstream ideologies” were also identified as possible terrorists in a recent U.S. Army training document.

Judge Orders Release Of Detained Marine Veteran.

HOPEWELL, Va. (WTVR) – A Hopewell circuit court judge has ordered that a Marine veteran detained over anti-government Facebook posts be released from a psychiatric hospital.

CBS 6 News’ Catie Beck said the Judge Allan Sharrett dismissed the case Thursday against Brandon Raub. The judge said the original petition for Raub’s detention contained no facts. In other words, there was no information on why Raub was being held — and the judge deemed this violated his civil liberties.

As a result, the judge ruled the government had no grounds to hold Raub.

Beck said the judge is in the process of writing an order for Raub’s release. He is expected to be released from a the hospital in Salem, Virginia Thursday afternoon.

The decorated U.S. Marine veteran was questioned by FBI agents about his Facebook postings and then hauled away from his Chesterfield County home in handcuffs last Thursday.

CBS 6 checked his criminal history and found it to be clean. And Brandon Raub’s mother told CBS 6 News’ Mark Holmberg that her son he had no mental health history. [READ MORE: Mother of detained Marine vet says he’s a patriot, not a threat]

“He never was violent or psychotic or anything like that,” Cathleen Thomas told CBS 6. “There were just conversations we had back and forth, very deep.”

Cell phone video shot by a friend that showed Raub being thrown to the ground and then put into a police car has gone viral on Youtube. His story, portrayed as a patriot whose free speech rights have been violated, has shot across the country.

A number of protestors gathered outside John Randolph Medical Center Monday, where Raub was being detained. Earlier this week, a judge approved a motion to transfer Raub to the Veterans Hospital in Salem.

The Rutherford Institute, a Charlottesville-based civil liberties group whose lawyers represented Raub, argued his arrest was was improper and unlawful. However, federal agents contend that Facebook posts made by Raub were “terrorist in nature.”

A former Marine who served two tours in Afghanistan with Raub told CBS 6 News’ Catie Beck Monday that Raub is a courageous and patriotic young man with showed no signs of posttraumatic stress disorder. Additionally, the man said he believes a mental evaluation would find Raub sane — and not someone who is capable of a terroristic threat.

Check back with WTVR.com for the latest updates on this developing story. Catie Beck will also have LIVE reports on CBS 6 News starting at 5 p.m.

UPDATE: Hearing under way for Marine veteran detained over Facebook posts

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A Chesterfield County man, and Marine veteran, was taken away in handcuffs without charges, and is being held for medical evaluation after questionable Facebook posts.

Brandon Raub, 26, was led away from his house in handcuffs around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night, according the video shot and uploaded to YouTube.

That video and information was sent to several CBS 6 News staffers and to the station’s main Facebook page late Friday afternoon.

The video, posted Friday afternoon, has amassed almost 67,000 views on YouTube as of 5:00 p.m. Sunday. The video has enlisted video responses as well. A Facebook group has been started in support of Brandon Raub, and currently has over 3,000 members.

The man was taken away from the scene by Chesterfield Police, but multiple supervisors with the department say that the police have not placed any charges on him and that they were just the transporting agency in this case.

Neither the FBI or the U.S. Secret Service have placed charges against the man, according the spokespersons with each agency

The FBI does confirm that agents went to the house of the former Marine to talk with him about his Facebook postings.

The postings talk about a revolution and that the government was responsible for 9/11.

Now CBS 6 has learned that the Rutherford Institute is looking into the man’s case and is trying to have someone attend a hearing scheduled for 10:00 a.m Monday morning. The man is currently at John Randolph Medical Center.

CBS 6 has been working this story since Friday night and will bring you the latest development as they become available. Catie Beck is following this developing story.

Pentagon to Monitor Soldiers' Dreams.

Source: RussiaToday

The Pentagon will be taking a page from the liner notes of classic rockers Cheap Trick as the DoD hopes to become the military’s official dream police with some spooky new sci-tech spectacles that they hope will curb PTSD-nightmares.

The US army is trying to perfect technology that will help soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress order have more soothing dreams as troops are constantly be subjected to flashbacks and nightmares resulting from their time serving with the military. The US Army is trying to get a project called “Power Dreaming” off the ground, and through it they hope to combat the fears of war that are dominating the dreams of servicemen, even years after they come home.

Though the project is still in experimental stages, the Army hopes to create pleasant, computer-generated imagery to be fed into a virtual world projected onto 3-d glasses worn by soldiers during sleep. These digital dreams will in turn try to tackle the problem of PTSD among current and veteran servicemen.

The program, says the Army, will “augment the current Cognitive Behavioral Treatment approaches for warrior trainees and other patients suffering with nightmares related to post traumatic stress disorder/traumatic brain injury with technological advances in biofeedback and Virtual Reality.” According to the official Army documents, the Power Dreaming project hopes to have soliders custom-create their own happy environment, “to develop physio-emotional states to counteract the reactive stress response inherent in trauma memories.”

To get the project off the ground, the US Army recently awarded $493,183 to a navy hospital in Washington State to begin testing.

During a recent poll from the Pew Research Center, 44 percent of soldiers surveyed that participated in the war in Afghanistan said that they have had difficulties readjusting to civilian life after completing their service. In that study, more than a third of those polled said that post-traumatic stress disorder has been a consequence of their time overseas; the National Vietnam Veterans’ Readjustment Study, however, suggests that the figure of combat vets that suffer from PTSD is closer to 52 percent.
