New Line Reboots Mortal Kombat With Rebirth Director, Writer.

New Line Cinema is rebooting its Mortal Kombat movie franchise, with Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen at the helm.

Best known for the remake of Fame, Tancharoen became an Internet sensation in June 2010 when his $7,500 short film reimagining Mortal Kombat as a gritty, Se7en-esque drama went viral online. Designed as “a calling card” to demonstrate what the director could do with the property, the eight-minute Mortal Kombat: Rebirth caught the attention of Warner Bros. executives, who tapped Tancharoen to helm the 10-episode Legacy web series.

Deadline reports the reboot will reteam the director with Rebirth writer Oren Uziel.

Based on the popular series of video games, Mortal Kombat debuted on the big screen in 1995, grossing $122 million worldwide and spawning a far less successful sequel and a short-lived television series.
