The UN General Assembly has voted to upgrade Palestinians’ diplomatic
status to a “non-member observer state,” thus implicitly recognizing a
Palestinian state. This comes despite strong opposition from the US and
Israel.
The Palestinian bid has been upheld with 138 votes in favor, 9 against and 41 abstentions.
Addressing
the General Assembly on Thursday Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
said the historic vote was the last chance to save the two-state
solution. He also told the meeting that it “is being asked today to issue the birth certificate of Palestine.”
In
his speech Abbas mentioned Israel’s deadly assault on Gaza that took
place this month and stressed that the Palestinians would accept "no less than the independence of the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital."
The Israeli government has described Abbas’s speech, which was met with a standing ovation at the General Assembly, as “defamatory and venomous.”"The
world watched a defamatory and venomous speech that was full of
mendacious propaganda against the IDF (army) and the citizens of
Israel," the Israeli PM’s office said in a statement.
Israeli UN ambassador, Ron Prosor, warned the General Assembly that “the Palestinians are turning their backs on peace.''

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged the parties to renew their commitment to negotiating a peace deal.
However
the US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice said the UN's vote on the
Palestinians’ status places further obstacles in the path of peace. "Today's grand pronouncements will soon fade and the Palestinian people will wake up tomorrow and find that little has changed," she told the assembly with a somber voice. "This resolution does not establish that Palestine is a state."
The vote could be seen as an embarrassing defeat for Washington, which has always been a staunch ally of Israel.
UN
move to upgrade Palestinians’ diplomatic status is a strong gesture of
support to the Palestinians which could help end the stalemate in the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told RT.
“We
think it’s very important to make sure that it can be used as a
stepping stone for restarting the negotiations between the Israelis and
the Palestinians.”
The international community is fed up with the conflict, he said. “Countries in the United Nations believe that dramatic steps need to be taken in order to have this conflict resolved.”
The
Palestinian bid to join the global body as a full member state failed
in 2011 due to lack of support at the UN Security Council. To get the
“non-member observer state” status, the Palestinians only needed a
simple majority at the 193-member General Assembly, such status is
already held by the Vatican.
Among many other nations the
Palestinian bid for an upgraded diplomatic status was backed by a number
of EU states, including France, Spain, Denmark, Portugal and Austria.
The bid had overwhelming support from developing nations.

The
nations who voted against the upgrade of Palestinian status were the
United States, Israel, Canada, the Czech Republic and Panama. The notion
of Palestinian statehood was also objected to by several Pacific island
nations, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and Palau.
The
Palestine Liberation Organization, the umbrella group of various
Palestinian factions, had previously had only “permanent observer”
status at the UN.
The new status now grants the Palestinians more
weight in peace talks with Israel and gives it a greater chance of
joining UN agencies and the International Criminal Court (ICC). Joining
the ICC would give the Palestinians greater legal basis for pursuing
possible war-crimes prosecutions against the Israeli military.
However
despite the support, the French Foreign Minister has warned
Palestinians against pursuing Israel in the International Criminal
Court, calling such a move “counter-productive.”
Following
the announcement, Palestinians erupted in celebrations, hugging each
other, waving flags and setting off fireworks. A crowd of at least 2,000
poured onto a square in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Joyful crowds
also gathered in the isolated Gaza Strip, which was the scene of recent
fighting between Palestinians and the Israeli Defense Force.
“It's a great feeling to have a state, even if in name only,” a civil servant Mohammed Srour told AP in Ramallah. “The
most beautiful dream of any man is to have an independent state,
particularly for us Palestinians who have lived under occupation for a
long time.''

Law enforcement agencies across the US are lining up to be among the
first to use drones to serve and protect, but unmanned vehicles are
likely to replace the traditional cop cruiser in just a few short years.
In places like California, Texas and Washington State,
police officers in recent weeks have intensified their demands for
surveillance drones, a necessary addition they say to their arsenal of
tools to help thwart crime. The Federal Aviation Administration has yet
to finalize plans to put drones in US airspace, but by the end of the
decade as many as 30,000 UAVs are expected to be soaring through the
sky.
By 2025, those drones are predicted to take the place of the
police patrol car as unmanned vehicles operated by cops are being
considered a likely inclusion on our roads of tomorrow.
Leading
up to this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, carmakers were asked to put
together prototypes showing what they envision highway patrol vehicles
to look like in the year 2025. The entries, from big manufacturers like
BWM and Honda, are largely based on the still primitive drone technology
that is used in military and surveillance missions overseas.
The car show’s organizers asked designers to develop a vehicle that
“should empower highway patrol officers to meet new demands and
effectively both ‘protect and serve’ the public while considering not
just enforcement needs but emission concerns, population growth and
transportation infrastructure.”
According to the New York Times, drone devices are far and away the popular choice. “By
coincidence or destiny, designers at several companies came up with
concepts for robotic, autonomously driven vehicles on ground, water and
air. These future police cruisers — usually presented as story boards
rather than actual vehicles — recall today’s Predator and Global Hawk
drones, stars of the anti-insurgency efforts. They may give new meaning
to those signs that read ‘Speed limit enforced by aircraft,’” writes the Times’ Phil Patton.
In
the prototype unveiled by BMW, a larger “ePatrol” vehicle is equipped
with up to three individual drones that can be deployed to follow
suspected criminals in high-speed chases across busy highways. Once one
of the smaller can catch up with a targeted car, those individual drones
would then be able to send an impulse to startle the driver. One of
those smaller drones would be able to fly on its own, and the other two
unmanned vehicles could roll on two wheels through busy roads.
At
Honda, designers there envision a similar concept: a large all-electric
patrol car that could dispatch at the drop of a hat unmanned motorcycles
to catch up with criminals and maintain coverage at high speeds for
long distances.
In addition to the BMW E-Patrol (Human-Drone
Pursuit Vehicle) and Honda’s CHP Drone Squad, Subaru also sent into the
car show designs for the SHARC, or Subaru Highway Automated Response
Concept. PSFK online describes it as “an autonomous, zero-emission
patrol vehicle” meant to “augment reduced highway patrol budgets by
providing remote 3D video to officers who can control the vehicle via
goggles and voice command.”
The winner of this year’s design challenge will be announced November 29 in Los Angeles.
Actor and comedian Jamie Foxx called Obama the Lord and Savior this weekend at the Soul Train awards and asked everyone to stand up to show their agreement.
A painting that depicts President Barack Obama as a
crucified Jesus Christ is prominently on display at a Boston community
college art gallery.
Michael D’Antuono, who painted Obama with his arms outstretched on a
cross with a crown of thorns on his head, said he actually painted the
picture four years ago. The painting was supposed to debut then in New
York but the event was canceled due to public outrage.
“The crucifixion of the president was meant metaphorically,” D’Antuono told Fox News. “My intent was not to compare him to Jesus.”
D’Antuono said the conservative media is trying to
“promote the idea that liberals believe the president to literally be
our savior” and has received e-mail messages that have been “anything
but Christian-like.”
“But I accepted that it is their right to express
themselves and hope that they now see it in their hearts to afford me
the same right,” D’Antuono said, nothing that he had regretted canceling
the event four years ago because “we should celebrate the fact that we
live in a country where we are given the freedom to express ourselves.”
The painting, which is called “Truth,” is on display at
the Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery until Dec. 15th and is a
part of the “Artists on the Stump -- the Road to the White House 2012”
exhibit.

In a secret project recently discovered, the United States planned to
blow up the moon with a nuclear bomb in the 1950s as a display of the
country’s strength during the Cold War space race.
The secret project, called “A Study of Lunar Research Flights”, as
well as “Project A119” was never carried out but initially intended to
intimidate the Soviet Union after their launch of the first artificial
satellite, Sputnik 1, which demonstrated their technological power, the
Daily Mail reports.
The sight of a magnificent nuclear flash from
Earth was meant to terrify the Soviet Union and boost US confidence,
physicist Leonard Reiffel, 85, told the Associated Press. The nuclear
device would have been launched from a missile from an unknown location.
It would have ignited upon impact with the moon, causing a massive
explosion that was visible from Earth.
The detonation would have
been the result of an atom bomb, since a hydrogen bomb was too heavy for
a missile to carry the 238,000 miles to the moon.
Astronomer Carl
Sagan was responsible for some of the calculations that could cause the
nuclear detonation. Sagan, who later became a famous author of popular
science, was a young graduate student at the time. He worked as a NASA
advisor from the 1950s onward and died in 1996.
One of Sagan’s
biographers claims he may have committed a security breach by revealing
the classified project in 1959 in his application for an academic
fellowship. Reiffel, who once served as deputy director at NASA and was
responsible for the nuclear research at the Armour Research Foundation
in 1958, confirmed this claim.
In his interview with AP, which
took place in the year 2000, Reiffel said the nuclear detonation could
have occurred by 1959, which is when the US Air Force deployed
intercontinental ballistic missiles. The project documents were kept
secret for nearly 45 years and the US government has never formally
confirmed its involvement in the study.
But in the end, the
mission was abandoned due to safety concerns about the radioactive
material that would contaminate space. The scientists were also worried
about the bomb detonating prematurely, thereby endangering the people on
Earth.
Rather than blow up the moon, the US continued the space
race, sending its first satellite, Explorer 1, into orbit on Jan. 31,
1958. The project was officially canceled by the Air Force in Jan. 1959,
and the US instead focused on sending a man to the moon.

Author Steve Quayle spoke about a small ‘alien’ found in Chile and
also shared his latest research on giants. The remains of a creature, a
mere six inches tall, was found in a part of Chile known for petrified
trees and mineralization, he reported. It came to his attention through
an “exobiologist,” Ramon Navia-Osorio.
Interestingly, Quayle said that
there’ve been live sightings of such beings in Colombia, just two months
ago– and that an outbreak of illness was associated with their
appearance.
Similar tiny creatures were drawn by Shoshone and Crow Indians
andreports and legends of them span the globe, said Quayle, who
theorized that earth changes may have caused such entities and spirits
to be loosed upon us.
On the other end of the spectrum, there is both modern and ancient
evidence for giants, with skeletons ranging from 17 to 19 ft. and
beyond, Quayle contended. According to Pravda,Professor Ernst Muldashev
conducted an expedition to Syria, Lebanon and Egypt and found the graves
of giants.Quayle believes that many of the giants were the
cannibalistic offspring of the Fallen Angels or Nephilim and that these
“fearful and ferocious” beings will be returning.

In esoteric and occult teachings, Giants are real beings who live on
spiritual, etheric and physical planes of existence. Giants were a
popular theme in theosophical literature, Atlantis, lost continents and
later the earth mysteries movement of Britain in the 1970s.
The concept of giants was discussed by the theosophist and occult
author Madame Blavatsky who wrote about the existence of giants in her
book The Secret Doctrine connecting them to her theory of root races and
claiming they correspond with Hindu cycle of the universe. According to
theosophists ape-like giants were the third root race who lived on the
continent of Lemuria. Theosophists also linked giants to the Atlantean
race.
Ahu Tongariki near Rano Raraku, Occultists and Theosophists claim the stone structures were built by a race of giants.
Madame Blavatsky claimed that the Easter Island stone structures
were built by the fourth root race, a race of giants. She also claimed
due to the size of Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan they had been built
by giants measuring 60 feet tall. Blavatsky linked the Polynesian
peoples as the very earliest survivors as a “sub-race” of the fourth
root-race, due to the Polynesian people being “a higher stature than the
rest of mankind”.
The German occultist Guido von List was influenced by Blavatsky’s
writings on giants and mixed together paganism, mythology, with
theosophy which accepted the existence of giants living in different
realms based on the first four rounds of the root race theory.
R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz the egyptologist and traditionalist
believed that giants had roamed the earth, and that after the fall of
Adam, humanity fell into a state of degeneration.
Lewis Spence a writer on mythology was critical of theosophy,
however he still accepted the existence of giants. He read and
researched english folklore and mythology depicting such giants such as
Magog and the British giant Albion. Another writer who was opposed to
occultism was the British journalist and author William Comyns Beaumont,
like Spence he also accepted the existence of giants based on folklore,
mythology, traditions and archeology. Beaumont believed that Britain
was the location of Atlantis and that it was occupied by a giant race of
Aryans.
Let’s
face it. Times are tough and getting new technology on the street for
the troops seems next to impossible. However, there are times when the
status quo is more expensive than the hardware the department is asking
for.
Case in point… MorphoIDent portable fingerprint scanner allows field
identification of a suspicious person without taking the officer off the
street to bring the individual to a precinct office or jail. The
device has a look similar to the average smart phone and fits in a
pocket just as easily. The Blue Tooth or USB interface allows direct
link to AFIS through a patrol officer’s laptop and results can be
delivered within seconds.
So how does spending $1,700 per scanner save the department money? That’s easy…
Consider the lost work time of spending one hour to transport and
fingerprint ID a person. Sure there’s the cost of one hour of the
officer’s salary, but add to it the total cost per hour of benefits, HR
admin time, and vehicle cost for the trip to the “cop shop”. That would
be the officer’s “loaded rate.” Now, add the loaded rate for anyone
assisting the officer once he gets to HQ. Intangible costs include the
loss of police presence on the street during that time. Now, multiply
that number by the total hours your department spends identifying
suspicious people per year.
Compare that number with the price of a scanner. Which one is cheaper? You tell me.
Instead of a full set of prints, only scans of the two index fingers
are taken. Once a match is made, the suspect’s picture and demographic
information are displayed on screen. The system is robust enough to
analyze multiple suspects at the same time (because birds of a feather
do flock together). A vibration alert notifies the officer when the
scan is successfully made and results are ready. The 2.4” VGA screen is
designed to be visible outdoors in full daylight.
So, how good is this whiz-bang gizmo? The manufacturer claims the
optical sensor is FBI certified and meets their Fingerprint Acquisition
Profile (FAP) 20 specifications. The MorphoIDent claims a scan
resolution of 500 dots per inch (dpi) and a 256 gray scale. Currently,
the King County Sheriff’s Office in the Seattle, Washington area
operates 4 units and anticipates delivery of 6 more.
Not everyone is ecstatic about the system. The American Civil
Liberties Union (not exactly a fixture in F.O.P. gatherings) has been
expressing concerns that the system might be used to collect and store
fingerprint information without probable cause. However, the system is
designed to query the AFIS database, not add to it. Besides, such
databases require a full set of prints instead of the two used by
MorphoIDent.
